Frequently Asked Questions
What are the differences between hemp and marijuana?
Hemp and marijuana are much like a sweet pepper and a hot pepper, or a Chihuahuas and a Great Dane. Hemp and marijuana are both part of the cannabis plant family but are VERY different. Manitoba Harvest Hemp Foods products contain less than 0.001% Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and will NOT cause a psychoactive effect nor will our products cause a false positive drug test.
Will I get "high" by consuming hemp foods?
No. Manitoba Harvest™ products contain less than 0.001% Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and will NOT cause a psychoactive effect nor will our products cause a false positive drug test.
Are hemp foods safe for pregnant women?
Yes. Hemp contains numerous nutrients, including folic acid, so it is a safe and delicious addition to expectant mothers’ diets.
Our hemp oil gel caps are considered a supplement. Under Canada’s Natural Health Products’ rules & regulations, we were legislated to include statement cautioning pregnant and breastfeeding women using gel caps. The formula for our hemp oil gel caps has not changed. There is NO evidence that consuming hemp oil gel caps is harmful to pregnant women or breastfeeding mothers.
Are hemp foods safe for children?
Absolutely! Just remember to consider body weight when determining serving size – much like you would with any other food. As a general guideline cut the recommended serving size shown on each package by 1/3 or ½ depending on the child’s age and size.
What about pets – are hemp foods safe for animals?
Manitoba Harvest is not an animal food manufacturer so we recommend contacting your trusted animal care professional for specific advice. However, we receive countless testimonials from customers about the observed benefits of adding hemp foods (hemp oil in particular) to their pets’ diet.
Just like with humans, be conscious of your pet’s weight when determining how much hemp oil to add to your pet’s food. A good parameter for oil – 1 teaspoon per 10 pounds of body weight.
How do hemp foods compare to other seeds, plant-based proteins, or oils?
Generally speaking, hemp foods offer more protein and a broader spectrum of omegas than flax, chia, or peas. For a detailed breakdown of how our products compare to other options, please visit our product comparison page.
What’s the CDB content in hemp oil?
CBD extracts are related to the medicinal marijuana industry NOT the hemp industry. Industrial hemp contains less than 0.003% THC and, therefore, is not a significant source of CBD.
Besides, CBD extracts come from the leaves of cannabis plants. In Canada, it is illegal to harvest the leaves of Industrial hemp.
How much soluble vs. insoluble fibre is in hemp foods?
Hemp Hearts contain 80-90% insoluble fibre and 10-20% soluble fibre.
Hemp Pro 50 and Hemp Pro Fibre contain 80-90% insoluble fibre and 10-20% soluble fibre. For all variations of Hemp Pro 70, we have removed fibre to give Hemp Pro 70 its creamy, easy-to-mix texture. The Hemp Pro 70 product line does not contain any fibre.
What is the potassium and phosphorous content in hemp foods?
Hemp seed’s nutritional profile can vary slightly from year to year, and from field-to-field based on growing conditions and seed variety. Manitoba Harvest works directly with farmers to advise on which variety is best for their fields. We also educate our farmer partners on ways to improve seed quality.
When Manitoba Harvest publishes nutritional information on our seed, we take a range or an average of various tests to account for slight variations in seed lots.
The average potassium content in Manitoba Harvest hemp seed (which is used for making Hemp Hearts and hemp protein powders) is 288mg per 30g serving.
The average phosphorous content in Manitoba Harvest hemp seed is 426mg per 30g serving.
I thought Omega 6s are bad for you?
Omega 6s often get a bad rep. Some Omega 6s, like GLA, play a crucial role in overall health. A general rule of thumb is to avoid all highly processed fats.
When it comes to our bodies we need a mix or balance of essential fatty acids (EFAs). It is best to consume foods that have naturally balanced omegas. Hemp has an Omega 6 to Omega 3 ratio of 3.75:1. Plus, the omegas in hemp are unrefined, raw, and easily digestible.
For more information about “good” and “bad” Omega 6s or the balance of omegas, contact your health care professional.
How much hemp is too much in a day?
Quantity is one of the pillars of nutrition for optimal health. (The other pillars being Quality, Nutrient Balance, and Frequency). For optimal energy and to avoid weight gain as well as overwhelming the digestive system, it’s best to consume appropriate portions at each eating occasion. Eating hemp foods at every single eating occasion in a day is A-Okay, just account for them as your protein and healthy fat sources.
What is the difference between Natural and Certified Organic?
“Certified Organic” denotes products made from seed that has been grown on certified organic land, and produced according to strict uniform standards that are verified by a government-designated organization. In North America, to receive organic certification farmland has to have been free from chemicals for a minimum three years. For manufacturers, certification also includes inspections of processing facilities and detailed report keeping. Manitoba Harvest Hemp Foods’ organic products are certified by Pro-Cert and are marked with the following logos:
“Natural” denotes products that are grown using conventional farming techniques and have NOT been genetically modified. Manitoba Harvest Hemp Foods products do NOT contain any additives, preservatives, fillers or artificial ingredients.
All Manitoba Harvest Hemp Foods’ products are Non-GMO Project Verified
Why do you have both Natural and Certified Organic?
As with most things, people like having a choice. Manitoba Harvest Hemp Foods proudly offers Natural and Certified Organic hemp food products in a variety of sizes to give people a choice.
What is the difference in how Natural and Certified Organic products are farmed?
Our Certified Organic products are made from seed that’s grown on certified organic land. Our natural products come from seed that’s grown conventionally.
Is Certified Organic the same thing as Non-GMO Project Verified?
“Certified Organic” refers to a process – how food is grown and how food products are manufactured. A government-designated organization verifies organic standards have been met. To receive certification, at least, 95% of the product’s contents must be organic. “Non-GMO Project Verified” focuses on one aspect – verifying that there are no genetically modified organisms within the product. Non-GMO Project Verified is a third-party verification to encourage removal of genetically modified organisms at all points within the ingredient supply chain. A Certified Organic product cannot contain any genetically modified ingredients. There are Certified Organic products that have chosen not to go through the Non-GMO Project certification and will therefore not include the Non-GMO Project Verified stamp on their packaging. Natural or conventional products can receive Non-GMO Project Verification if they meet the rigorous and extensive audit process relating to genetically modified organisms. Except for our hemp oil gel caps, all of Manitoba Harvest products are Non-GMO Project Verified.
What is kosher?
Complex and extensive. Given the complex nature of the laws of kosher, one should consult an Orthodox Rabbi whenever a kosher issue arises.
How do I tell if your product has gone rancid?
Hemp food products should have a slightly nutty taste to them. You would be able to tell just by opening a package if a product has gone rancid – the product would have a slightly sour odor and taste.
As you can see on our product labels, products should be stored in the fridge once opened to protect the omegas and keep the products as fresh as possible. Hemp oil should be refrigerated before and after opening.
I’ve noticed sometimes my hemp oil/Hemp Hearts/protein powders are slightly different shades each time I buy them. Why is this?
Hemp foods are a natural, non-GMO product. There will be slight variations in colour depending on what hemp seed variety was grown, the soil, the region, and growing season. The color difference between product lots has nothing to do with quality – we run small batch testing and every single product goes through a minimum of 34 tests from farm gate to store shelf.
Do I need to refrigerate Manitoba Harvest products?
Hemp oil must be refrigerated before and after opening to protect hemp’s precious omegas. To extend the freshness of Manitoba Harvest Hemp Hearts, Hemp Heart Bites and hemp protein powders, it is recommended to store products in the fridge once opened.
Hemp Bliss Organic Hemp Beverage can be stored in the cupboard until used, but MUST be refrigerated after opening.
Do Manitoba Harvest products contain any known allergens?
Hemp seed – which is the primary ingredient in all of Manitoba Harvest’s products, contains no known allergens.
Are Manitoba Harvest Hemp Foods products gluten free?
Hemp seed naturally does not contain gluten. However, only one barley or wheat kernel amongst 50,000 hemp seed can potentially result in a positive test for gluten. As the world’s largest hemp food manufacturer to grow, make and sell our own line of hemp foods, this one seed could inadvertently be introduced at any point. A single wheat or barley kernel could be introduced during harvest, seed cleaning, or even during delivery to our facility. This potential concerns us greatly.
Manitoba Harvest strives to deliver the highest quality hemp foods. With our valued customers in mind, we have worked diligently to provide the most accurate product specifications.
We are aggressively looking for processes and methodologies that would provide us with the certainty that our products are indeed gluten free. Until we are able to provide consistent and accurate controls, we are erring on the side of caution.
Instead of stating our products are gluten-free (which implies an absolute), you will see the following on our packages instead:

Why are the Hemp Hearts and hemp protein powders in a bag/pouch?
Our products proudly do NOT contain additives or preservatives. It is absolutely crucial that packaging be light and air impermeable to protect hemp’s precious omegas and keep the product as fresh as possible.
We try to find the most sustainable, environmentally friendly packaging option that allows for Hemp Hearts and our hemp protein powders to still be protected. We choose pouches because over their lifecycle have 1/10th the impact of plastic canisters and although they are not recyclable, they can still be re-used numerous times.
You will also find that we do NOT include a plastic scoop in our packaging. Not only does everyone have a spoon at home, but we also wanted to reduce our carbon footprint by eliminating extra plastic in the environment.
Is your packaging recyclable?
No, our pouches are not recyclable. Where possible, we are trying to make sustainable choices. You will also find that we do NOT include a plastic scoop in our packaging. We figure everyone has a spoon at home so why add to the waste.
As for packaging, it is absolutely crucial that packaging be light and air impermeable to protect hemp’s precious omegas and keep the product as fresh as possible. Currently there are no food grade biodegradable materials that would protect our products in the way that is needed. We are however investigating other options and are part of the OSC2 (One Step Closer), which is a group focused on helping to study and promote sustainable packaging options.
Does Manitoba Harvest irradiate its products?
No, none of Manitoba Harvest products are irradiated. Food safety and quality is Manitoba Harvest’s top priority. In our manufacturing we implement many tools, protocols, and tests to ensure safe and high quality products but irradiation is not one of them.
Manitoba Harvest is proud to be the world’s largest vertically integrated hemp food manufacturer. We control the process from seed to shelf, and can test and reject seed upon delivery, if microorganisms are too high.
Where do I find the amino acid profile for your hemp protein powders?
You will find this information on the individual product pages under the nutritional facts tab. Amino Acid profile, ingredient lists and other information is all there.
Please note: We are currently working on the Amino Acid profile for HempPro 70. Stay tuned…
What are the natural plant extracts in HempPro 70?
Natural plant extracts are derived from edible herb species oregano and lemon balm. We use a very small quantity of this FDA/CFIA approved product to help protect HempPro 70’s quality and extend its freshness.
How come you only offer Hemp Pro 70 in natural, will you ever offer an organic option?
To be frank, it comes down to keeping the suggested retail price of our products reasonable. Hemp Pro 70 is the most expensive product we make and to offer it in organic would increase costs by at least 25%. We hope over the years more organic hemp will be grown, helping to reduce costs of organic seed so we can consider offering an organic version of Hemp Pro 70. For the foreseen future though, we will not be offering an organic Hemp Pro 70 option.
Why is your hemp oil green coloured?
We make our hemp oil by pressing the whole hemp seed, similar to juicing. When pressed hemp is naturally a green colour. We are not adding any colouring, preservatives, or additives. We like to see think chlorophyll when see hemp oil’s rich green shade since hemp contains chlorophyll.
Did you consider stevia as a sweetener in Hemp Heart Bites?
With all of our products, we aim to use ingredients that are naturally occurring and not highly processed. Stevia is often processed with other non-natural products. In addition, stevia often creates a metallic taste to final product when used as an ingredient.
Why do you use sugar in Hemp Heart Bites?
Hemp Heart Bites are a delicious and nutritious snack that you can enjoy on the go. Hemp Hearts are the majority ingredient in Hemp Heart Bites. To keep Hemp Hearts together in this convenient bite-size snack, organic sweeteners (organic cane sugar and organic brown rice syrup) are used.
We tried different sweeteners, looking for options that provided optimal taste and texture while being organic and minimally processed. Organic brown rice syrup and organic cane sugar were the winners. Compared to other options like white sugar, organic cane sugar is less processed.
Are the Hemp Heart bars Non-GMO?
YES. All three flavours of Hemp Heart bars are Non-GMO Project Verified and thus made from non-GMO ingredients.
Are Hemp Heart Bars raw?
Hemp Hearts, the primary ingredient in the bar is raw. However, the organic sweeteners are cooked.
Why is rosemary used in your Hemp Heart bars?
We use a natural rosemary extract in our Hemp Heart bars to help prolong the shelf life and avoid rancidity.
What is pectin and why do you use it in your Hemp Heart bars?
Pectin is derived from the natural vegetable raw materials apple pomace (the pulpy residue after the liquid has been pressed) and citrus peels.
Pectin is a thickener used to create an optimal bar texture. Pectin ensures ingredients bind together and that the bar is not too sticky.
The pectin amounts to less than 1% of the formulation, and does not contribute to the sugar content.
I noticed vanilla flavour (or chocolate flavour, or caramel flavour) in the Hemp Heart bar ingredients. What is vanilla flavour and why are you using flavouring vs extracts?
A lot of our products are single-ingredient. Adding additional ingredients is a big deal for us. We strive to select ingredient options that meet our standards of sustainable sourced, Non-GMO, preferably organic, delicious, – and ideally, offer some sort of nutritional benefit.
Ingredients are also selected on taste, texture, – and the ability to consistently manufacture a delicious volume to keep up with consumer demand.
Vanilla flavour (or chocolate flavour or caramel flavour) is a manufactured substance to create flavour but is not directly derived from a spice, fruit, plant, or herb.
We choose vanilla (or chocolate or caramel) flavour for both the taste and texture profile. Our flavours are all organic and Non-GMO.
Where do I find your products?
Manitoba Harvest products are found in thousands of health food & grocery stores – including mass retailers. Visit the find a location page to find the store closest to you.
Have you considered switching to glass packaging, especially for hemp oil?
We have performed analysis on glass packaging and deemed glass unsuitable at this time. Hemp’s precious omega profile is sensitive to light, so we prefer a thick food-safe plastic to best protect the product. Plus, glass packaging is heavier which would impact shipping costs.
