Hemp Questions

Can I cook with Manitoba Harvest hemp products?

Hemp Seed Oil is sensitive to heat and rather than frying or cooking with it, we recommend using it to finish dishes like pasta, salads, and to incorporate into dips and sauces. Our Hemp Hearts are safe to bake at 300 F or higher because the omegas are protected within the structure of the hemp heart. Hemp Hearts are also great for topping on smoothies, salads, and oatmeal too. Check out our recipes for more inspiration!

Where is your hemp grown?

We have been sourcing our hemp from Canadian farmers for more than 20 years and we will continue to partner with them for our line of hemp food products. We are proud to be working directly with U.S. farmers compliant with the 2018 Farm Bill to source the highest-quality hemp for our Broad Spectrum Hemp Extract with CBD.

How much hemp is too much in a day?

Quantity is one of the pillars of nutrition for optimal health. (The other pillars being Quality, Nutrient Balance, and Frequency). For optimal energy and to avoid weight gain as well as overwhelming the digestive system, it’s best to consume appropriate portions at each eating occasion. Eating hemp foods at every single eating occasion in a day is A-Okay, just account for them as your protein and healthy fat sources.

I thought Omega 6s are bad for you?

Omega 6s often get a bad rep. Some Omega 6s, like GLA, play a crucial role in overall health. A general rule of thumb is to avoid all highly processed fats.

When it comes to our bodies we need a mix or balance of essential fatty acids (EFAs). It is best to consume foods that have naturally balanced omegas. Hemp has an Omega 6 to Omega 3 ratio of 3:1. Plus, the omegas in hemp are unrefined and easily digestible.

For more information about “good” and “bad” Omega 6s or the balance of omegas, contact your health care professional.

What are the differences between hemp and marijuana?

Hemp and marijuana are much like a sweet pepper and a hot pepper, or a Chihuahua and a Great Dane. Hemp and marijuana are both part of the cannabis plant family but are VERY different. Manitoba Harvest Hemp Foods products contain less than 0.001% Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and will NOT cause a psychoactive effect.

How do hemp foods compare to other seeds, plant-based proteins, or oils?

Generally speaking, hemp foods offer more protein and a broader spectrum of omegas than flax, chia, or peas.

What about pets – are hemp foods safe for animals?

Manitoba Harvest is not an animal food manufacturer so we recommend contacting your trusted animal care professional for specific advice. However, we receive countless testimonials from customers about the observed benefits of adding hemp foods (hemp oil in particular) to their pets’ diet.

Just like with humans, be conscious of your pet’s weight when determining how much hemp oil to add to your pet’s food. A good parameter for oil – 1 teaspoon per 10 pounds of body weight

Can I use Ground Hemp as a 1:1 substitute for other flours?

We recommend substituting up to 1/3 of the flour in your recipe for ground hemp.  This is a great way to add additional protein, fiber, iron, magnesium, zinc, and copper to your baked goods.

How is Ground Hemp made?

Whole hemp seeds are cold pressed to remove oil and milled to maintain ultimate freshness.

What is the potassium and phosphorous content in hemp foods?

Hemp seed’s nutritional profile can vary slightly from year to year, and from field-to-field based on growing conditions and seed variety. Manitoba Harvest works directly with farmers to advise on which variety is best for their fields. We also educate our farmer partners on ways to improve seed quality.

When Manitoba Harvest publishes nutritional information on our seed, we take a range or an average of various tests to account for slight variations in seed lots.

The average potassium content in Manitoba Harvest hemp seed (which is used for making Hemp Hearts and Hemp Protein Powders) is 288 mg per 30 g serving.

The average phosphorous content in Manitoba Harvest Hemp Hearts is 426mg per 30g serving.

What’s the CBD content in hemp seed oil?

Hemp seed, which is what Manitoba Harvest food products are derived from, contains very little CBD. CBD is pressed from the flowers, leaves and stalks of the Cannabis plant, not from hemp seeds like Manitoba Harvest’s current products. If you’re looking for products that contain CBD, shop our Broad Spectrum Hemp Extract oil drops, oil sprays, softgels and protein powder.

Will I get "high" by consuming hemp foods?

No, hemp will not get you high. It’s like comparing mint and basil – they’re both herbs, but they’re used in very different ways for very different results.

Hemp foods contain less than 0.001% Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and will NOT cause a psychoactive effect.

What is the difference between a hemp seed and a hemp heart?

Hemp seeds are the seed of the Cannabis Sativa plant. They have a hard, nut-like exterior and soft chewy inside. Think of a hard shelled sunflower seed.

Hemp hearts are hulled hemp seeds. They are the soft, chewy center inside the shell of the hemp seed. Think of the tasty, soft inside of a sunflower seed that you eat. Hemp hearts have a subtle nutty flavor and can be consumed raw. You can also cook with them, making them a great pantry staple. Hemp hearts are versatile and fun to experiment with – add them to smoothies, desserts, and more!

What sweetener is used in Hemp Yeah! Granola?

Hemp Yeah! Granola is made with organic cane sugar and organic tapioca sugar which are both natural sweeteners. Our Honey & Oats granola also uses honey as a sweetener.

What sweetener is used in Hemp Yeah! Bars?

Hemp Yeah! Bars use tapioca syrup and agave syrup which are both derived from natural, non-GMO sources. Our Coconut Cashew Dark Chocolate bar also uses molasses as a sweetener, but the minimal level we are using is primarily to provide the golden coloring and provide a natural caramel flavor.

Is the chocolate footer coating Fair Trade? What other details can you provide about this chocolate?

Our chocolate is Certified Fair Trade Dark Chocolate. Our supplier sources their chocolate ingredients (cocoa liquor and cocoa butter) from all major growing regions globally. Our Fair Trade Dark Chocolate contains approximately 48% cacao.

What is the benefit of a CO2 extraction process?

The CO2 extraction method uses carbon dioxide under high pressure and extremely low temperatures to preserve and maintain the purity of the extract, leaving behind no chemical residues. Manitoba Harvest carefully selected this process to deliver a product that is safe, potent, consistent and THC Free*.

*(contains less than 0.01% THC)

Are your products third-party tested for safety and consistency?

Yes! Every batch of Manitoba Harvest Broad Spectrum Hemp Extract with CBD goes through a rigorous third-party testing process to ensure maximum purity, label accuracy and absence of harmful toxins and residues. Each product is traceable from seed to shelf.

How do I calculate my optimal serving?

CBD and other cannabinoids affect people differently, so the ideal serving may vary by individual. Many experts recommend starting with a small daily serving and increasing slowly from there until you notice desired effects.

Will Manitoba Harvest CBD get me high?

No, our Broad Spectrum Hemp Extract with CBD is completely non-intoxicating. While some users of CBD report a sense of wakeful calm, Broad Spectrum Hemp Extract with CBD is not derived from the marijuana plant, does not result in a “high,” contains less than 0.01% THC (the compound that creates intoxication) and is considered THC Free.

How do I choose the product that’s right for me?

There are no set guidelines for choosing one format (drops, sprays, or softgels), over another, but here are some factors you may want to consider:

CBD Oil Drops offer flexibility for precision serving sizes, with 10 mg, 30mg, or 50mg of CBD per 1 ml serving.

CBD Oil Sprays also offer flexibility, with 5 mg of CBD in approximately 4 pumps. Both drops and sprays are good options for those wanting to experiment with their serving size.

CBD Softgels offer a consistent and reliable serving size in 15mg or 50mg CBD per serving options and are a great option for those looking for ease and convenience.

Can I travel with Broad Spectrum Hemp Extract with CBD?

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has updated its policy to allow products that contain no more than 0.3% THC on a dry weight basis. Our Broad Spectrum Hemp Extract is THC Free*.

For the CBD Oil Drops, how many milliliters are in 1 full dropper?

For both the Unflavored and Peppermint CBD Oil Drops, 1 full dropper equals ~1 ml of Broad Spectrum Hemp Extract.

Why does the carrier oil matter for CBD Oils and CBD Sprays?

Our Broad Spectrum Hemp Extract CBD Oil Drops and CBD Oil Sprays are made with Organic Coconut MCT Oil, which has fewer calories than other oils, is high in bio-availability and preserves the potency of the extract’s antioxidants—unlike olive oil or other carrier oils, which can be unstable in liquid form if not refrigerated. MCT Oil also has a neutral flavor that’s pleasant on its own (in the Unflavored Oil), and a prime canvas for the natural minty flavor of our Peppermint CBD Oil Drops and CBD Oil Spray.

Is Manitoba Harvest Broad Spectrum Hemp Extract organic?

Manitoba Harvest Broad Spectrum Hemp Extract with CBD is made using organic ingredients, including Organic Hemp Seed Oil, Organic Coconut MCT Oil and Organic Peppermint Oil. The hemp extract itself is not currently certified organic, because it could not be under the previous Farm Bill. However, the crop is grown following organic practices.

Will I test positive for THC on a drug screen?

Our Broad Spectrum Hemp Extract with CBD is made from hemp with less than 0.01% THC and goes through an exacting extraction process to further minimize unwanted components in our final product.

Is it safe for me to take?

As with anything else, when considering whether Broad Spectrum Hemp Extract is a good addition to your wellness regimen, it is important to do your own research and consult with your medical professional, particularly for those with medical conditions or taking prescriptions, women who are pregnant or nursing, and children. Our products are not intended for use by children.

What conditions can CBD help with?
